DART offers a variety of tools to help you get to your destination. Even our friends in Baton Rouge next state over didn't know these coins existed. We travelled into 5 other states and nobody would accept them - I'm sure people thought we were trying to hand over 'fake money'. If travelling outside of Dallas I recommend you take these coins into a bank beforehand and change them to $1 notes. Also if using notes to buy your DART ticket you receive any change owed in 'gold' $1 coins. It was a 2 1/2 hour trip from DFW to downtown so be prepared.
